ASHTANGA YOGA RETREAT

WITH IAN CHENEY

19 – 26 January, 2019

Prices from: $850 USD

Come join us for a week of sun, see and Ashtanga Yoga at the beautiful Vikasa Retreat centre on Koh Samui, Thailand.

WHAT IS ASHTANGA YOGA?

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the original form of dynamic (movement based) yoga. It is a system of combining the breath with the movement of the body in a in a controlled and synchronised way. This synchronicity of movement from posture to posture is what we call Vinyasa. It draws upon the body to build strength as well as develop flexibility for an all-round balanced practice.
Morning session will be taught in the traditional ‘Mysore style’ self-practice format making it open and accessible to all levels.

WHAT YOUR DAY WILL LOOK LIKE?

We’ll begin each day with an early morning Mysore session at around sunrise. There will be either one or two shifts depending on the number of students and/or beginners. Tea and Coffee will be available before class.

Relax and have a healthy nourishing brunch buffet in the café, and spend your days relaxing on the beach or by the infinity pool; enjoying incredible Thai massages or exploring this beautiful island with its temples, waterfalls and lush jungle.

We’ll then have a minimum of 4 evening classes and workshops with more if there is demand. These sessions will vary and encompass different elements of practical yoga philosophy, technique, and anatomy sessions with the amazing Elinor Tierney-Heckenberg (BExSci)

The evening is then yours to enjoy a nutritious dinner of beautiful fresh Thai food and juices, heading off to a night market, or simply relaxing in your room.

Teachers

Ian was first introduced to Astanga Yoga in 2002 by a friend at University and has been hooked on the practice ever since. In 2012, he began a 2-year apprenticeship with Gingi Lee in London, before completing a Yoga Alliance 200hr qualification with principle teacher – John Scott.

In 2014, he travelled for the first time to Mysore, India to study under the guidance of Sharath Jois at the K. Pattabhi Jois Astanga Yoga Institute. He returned each year and in 2017, Sharath gave his blessing for Ian to teach Ashtanga Yoga as a KPJAYI Authorised teacher.

Ian is now based in Melbourne, Australia and travels and teaches globally. He brings with his teaching the dedication and enthusiasm he finds within his own practice. He believes that yoga is a deeply personal experience and encourages students to find their own space, in balance with the wisdom of the tradition. Fundamentally though, while yoga can be challenging on many levels, first and foremost it should be a loving, warm and fun experience for all.

Elinor, both an Exercise Science Educator and Yoga Teacher is currently studying Medicine (as well as being a dedicated Ashtangi) in Melbourne. She will both be working with Ian in the Mysore room as well as offering her insights into Anatomy for Yoga during the afternoon workshops.
