The Yoga Teacher Training is taught in Vikasa Yoga style. The practice of yoga itself changes with time and place, as new techniques are being introduced. The approach is becoming more technical, precise and scientific. Any definition of it as a system or style seems to be a limitation in itself. The Vikasa yoga style offers the “Evolution of Yoga”. The approach is an ever evolving process, which anyone can be a part of, rather than a complete static system. The style is based on integrating deep core work with precise alignment, combining active dynamic exercises from different disciplines. It includes static poses from classic hatha yoga schools, as well as dynamic pressure and deep relaxation. It explores ha-tha or the yin and yang concept to its maximum potential.

Become a Yoga Instructor

This program is about embarking on a journey of self-inquiry, with the support of a like-minded group, that leads to action within our community and outside world. “Action” can be many things, ranging from healing relationships with family and friends, to extending oneself to the larger community, or doing national or international work. The main intention is to understand the nature of our interdependence and our unique role in the web of life; to feel significant and as a part of this greater whole. This is the embodiment of Karma Yoga and also Dhamma, or selfless service and the fulfilling of your duty in this life. During this week, you will be guided through an intensive transformational process using vinyasa flow yoga and other tools to uncover your deepest passions and motivation. We will combine yoga asanas, meditation and visualization, experiential exercises, process work and ritual with the practical tools of communication, organizing and collaborating with your peers. We will also introduce practical methods for each of you to begin to bring your own unique purpose into the world as action with the support and inspiration of your community. You’ll leave with a clearer sense of purpose and passion, armed with skills to help you be a more effective leader and agent of change in the world.

Philosophy classes cover the most important and relevant ancient texts of India that show the bigger spiritual picture of yoga and how to live in it. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras will be examined carefully as this masterpiece provides a clear view into the nature of Mind, self-discipline and the path to Enlightenment. The Bhagavad Gita will be studied as a means for understanding Dhamma, or our sacred duty in the world. Sanskrit, the language of yoga, will be explored as you hear and recite different mantras and sutras which invoke the wisdom of sages and the empowering vibrations of the Sanskrit alphabet. This bridge of spoken Sanskrit will lead you into energetic practices, really experiencing what the ancient Yogis of India have blessedly passed down to us. Pranayama, methods of controlling and moving energy, will be taught and practiced regularly, as well as group singing in the Kirtan. Pranayama can greatly increase the power of our discipline and our bodies. The Kirtan experience helps us dissolve into the heart of the human spirit, singing together as one group with no thoughts, just our voices and the music.

Vikasa Yoga Style

Vikasa means evolution, or spiritual development, when translated from Sanskrit. The concept of “evolution of yoga” is based on the notion that everything in the world evolves constantly, including human beings. Our primary goal as a human race and that of any living organism is evolution and yoga can be seen as a tool to facilitate such evolution in any given individual. However, as the practice of yoga itself changes with time and place, as new techniques are being introduced, as the approach is becoming more technical, precise and scientific – any definition of it as a system or style seems to be a limitation in itself.

The “Evolution of Yoga” approach is based on integrating deep core work with precise alignment, combining active dynamic exercises from different disciplines with static poses from classic hatha yoga schools, alternating dynamic and static, pressure and deep relaxation, therefore exploring ha-tha or the yin and yang concept to its maximum potential, using the principle of hyper compensation.

Evolution of Yoga is about challenging yourself with an ever-progressing program in order to transform, optimize and balance to fine-tune your system. Core bodywork is integrated with precision breathing, through which the highest states of concentration can be experienced. As the students get more familiar with the bodywork, pranayama or breathing exercises are introduced to take the practitioner to the next level. This ultimately leads to meditation and expansion of consciousness, or in other words, evolution.

Vikasa yoga is an integral system of yoga, a philosophy and lifestyle based on traditional concepts of hatha yoga, adapted for the modern life in Western society. We view practice of yoga as a tool for each human’s personal physical and spiritual development, which is, in essence, evolution. Every human being can contribute to the overall evolution of the species by evolving him / herself first.

Therefore, the ultimate goal of this yoga system is realizing your maximum potential in creativity, consciousness and freedom. All aspects of traditional hatha yoga and Himalayan Vinyasa are present in the Vikasa Yoga method, such as Asana (static pose), pranayama (control of energy through breath), concentration techniques and meditation, as well as moral codes and behavior of the practitioner towards oneself, others and the environment.

The practice is designed for maximum effectiveness and efficiency on the physical level, with safety being a top priority. Key principles and rules of yoga are taught, allowing the teachers of Vikasa Yoga and dedicated practitioners to become free from any routines by gaining understanding, knowledge and insight into the methodology and the effects of practice. This method will produce maximum results in the minimum amount of time, bringing your awareness and focus from external to internal level, leading to meditative states and awakening of consciousness and creativity. The idea is to integrate and balance all aspects of the human body, such as the physical, energetic, emotional, intellectual and karmic through the systematic practice of yoga, making the practitioner free and achieving the ultimate goal – happiness.

Deciding to do a Yoga Teacher Training in Asia, especially in Thailand, has some nice added benefits. Thai culture is infused with Buddhism which is an offspring of the ancient Yogic philosophies. It reflects in the behavior and character of the people here who generally tend to be very friendly and polite. You’ll find lots of inspiration visiting the Thai temples and seeing people make ritual offerings all over the place. Most Thai’s are Buddhist, but they incorporate the Hindu deities used by the traditional Yogis of India into their belief system. It’s common to see statues of Shiva, Ganesh, Saraswati and so on. The climate here is also just right for having a vigorous and detoxifying practice. Enjoy hands on experience teaching and assisting your fellow classmates as we compassionately guide you to be the best you can be. Whether you plan to go on from your training as a teacher, or a practitioner with a deeper appreciation for yourself and the yogic lifestyle, you’ll be confident and energized to give a little more love to the world around you as you live a happier and healthier life.

The answer by Konstantin, founder of Vikasa Yoga and teacher:

“That’s actually one of the questions I get asked the most in relation to this course. Actually, pretty much half of the group is in that situation. In fact, I was in that situation myself, doing my teacher training just 6 month into yoga and I was surprised to see that most of the people taking the course with me were also beginners, as are most of the people who have signed up already for our course.

What you have to understand is that this course, like a university degree, is just the beginning, but it will allow you to gather real life experience after, possibly study more, explore and experience many things through your own practice. Ultimately it’s all up to you.

So in my opinion, this course is more than suitable at this stage. It’s not necessarily true that it will be more useful to you at a later stage, as I said it’s just a base that will allow you to grow faster and give you something to lean on, but not depend on forever.

You will definitely love Koh Samui, our lovely staff, great team of teachers, and the Vikasa Retreat and restaurant, because so far everybody else does! This place is awesome and filled with love and care and when something is done with love – it can’t be bad! Many beginners have taken this course already and they were all really happy, you can read some of the blogs to see this.

Also, just keep in mind this course is not designed for established teachers, it is for people who either wish to become ones in the future, or just people who want to learn and understand the practice a bit deeper than the shallow level you can get from following a regular class at the local yoga studio. Plus the whole one month immersion course in Thailand is just an amazing experience.

Personally, I did my first teacher training after just half a year of practice. That’s when I realized I don’t want to only follow, but rather understand what I am doing and I had no intention of becoming a teacher at that time.”

To enter Thailand, you must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. Most nationalities can obtain a 30 day visa which is given upon entry. If you are anticipating staying longer, then for a small fee you can apply for a 60 day visa before leaving for Thailand. You must check with the Thai Embassy in your home country prior to departure. Once you arrive in Thailand, the maximum visa awarded upon arrival will be 30 days.

Yes you can book at another location but it’s recommended to stay at Vikasa so you can get the real Vikasa community feel. We understand some people may have budget issues. We think our Zen Bungalow is a great budget choice that allows the guest to stay at Vikasa for a fraction of the cost of the standard rooms. However, if you want to go cheaper still, there is another option across the street from Vikasa at the Muy Thai boxing camp dorms: http://www.yuthpanmuaythai.com/ . We had a look at the rooms – they are quite big and clean and do have air conditioning and hot water showers. The monthly rate is roughly 8,500 Baht. You can send an email enquiry referring to Vikasa Yoga here – pan_bin777@hotmail.com.

We suggest you arrive at least one day in advance to take the opportunity to relax, settle in, adjust to jet lag and of course meet our Vikasa team! We offer 20% room discount to all TT course participants who wish to extend their stay. Another benefit of arriving a day early is the opportunity to take advantage of our free regular class schedule and prepare yourself physically to enjoy and try some of the Vikasa yoga styles and teachers here at our resort. inspire@vikasa.com.

Of course. Your partner can join you in Ocean Rooms or Cliff View Rooms.

Thailand is a very safe country. Thai people are very friendly and you can feel the peaceful Buddhist atmosphere everywhere. Koh Samui is very peaceful and many Thais can speak English well. You can arrive worry-free because the Vikasa team picks you up personally at the airport.
